PDO (polydioxanone) threads are a type of facial rejuvenation treatment that involves the insertion of biodegradable suture threads into the skin at a sub-dermal level to lift and tighten the skin, improve texture and tone, and stimulate collagen production. As the collagen production increases, the skin will become firmer and smoother, and the treated area will appear more youthful and rejuvenated.

PDO threads are dissolved over time by your body, leaving behind an intact collagen fibrous protein matrix that produces a gradual skin thickening, tightening and rejuvenating effect. The results of the treatment will gradually improve as the collagen production continues.

PDO thread treatment is generally quick and minimally invasive, and it has a low risk of complications when performed by a qualified healthcare provider. It is an effective treatment option for individuals who are looking to improve the appearance of their skin without undergoing surgery.

The results of PDO thread treatment can last for up to 18 months, depending on the individual’s skin type, lifestyle factors, and quantity of threads used.

PDO Threads may be used to improve skin texture and address common concerns such as skin laxity, sagging, fine lines and wrinkles. It is effective for improving facial contouring and adding definition.

Ideal candidates for this treatment are patients in their late 30’s to late 50’s, with mild-moderate signs of aging and/or skin laxity. PDO Threads are not recommended for patients with advanced or severe signs of aging, those with very thin skin or excessive sagging/loose skin.

Treatment Information

Treatment Preparation

Avoid any non-essential blood-thinners, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) medications and certain supplements for 1 week prior to treatment, including:

  • Vitamins D, A and E
  • Fish, Flaxseed or Evening Primrose Oil
  • Magnesium or Ginkgo
  • Ibuprofen and Voltaren

Do not consume alcohol within 48 hours of treatment.

Patients on prescribed anti-coagulant medications such as Aspirin/Warfarin should continue as directed by their treating Doctor. Patients must be aware that this may increase the likelihood and severity of bruising.

Please arrive to your appointment with a clean face/neck, completely free of any make-up, sunscreen or skincare. Men should shave prior to treatment.

What to Expect

During a consultation, our Registered Nurse and Doctor assess the skin, discuss any concerns and treatment goals, and answer any questions that you may have. They will then determine the appropriate number of threads and the best placement for the threads to achieve the desired results.

Complimentary numbing is administered for your comfort prior to the procedure. The PDO threads are introduced into the skin through a fine needle. No incisions, stitches, or general anaesthetic is involved in the procedure. A treatment session may involve the insertion of several threads, depending on the size and complexity of the area being treated. Most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects of PDO thread treatment are mild and temporary, and may include:

  1. Bruising: Usually resolves completely within 1-2 weeks.
  2. Swelling: Temporary and minor asymmetry may be present from swelling. Usually resolves completely within 1-2 weeks.
  3. Redness: The thread insertion sites may be red immediately after treatment. This usually resolves within a few hours.
  4. Pain or discomfort: Some patients may experience pain or discomfort during or after treatment, but this is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
  5. Itchiness: The treated area may be itchy after treatment, but this is usually mild and should resolve within a few days.
  6. Occasionally, mild depression/irregularity/dimpling of the skin may appear at the thread insertion site and usually subsides within 1-2 weeks.
  7. Residual tenderness may last for up to 4 weeks post treatment, it is normal to experience small ‘zap’ sensations during the healing process.

If you have any concerns about the risks and potential complications of PDO thread treatment, you should discuss them with your healthcare provider before undergoing the treatment. It is important to report any concerns or unusual symptoms as soon as possible.

Follow Up & Maintenance

A follow-up appointment is available at 6 weeks post treatment to review aesthetic outcome. Please note: Results are typically seen at 6-8 weeks with continued improvement over 2-6 months following the procedure. No follow-up appointments will take place prior to this time unless advised by the treating practitioner.

The effects of your treatment are expected to last anywhere from 12-18 months.  It is important to note that individual results may vary and that the duration of the treatment can be affected by a number of factors, including the quantity of threads used, the specific area being treated, and the patient’s lifestyle and metabolism.

Repeat treatment is recommended every 12-18 months, but may be repeated as soon as 6 months to prolong effects and enhance long-term results.
